Greater Iowa Credit Union is celebrating 90 years of serving the community and its members. Created by buildings and grounds crew employees at Iowa State University in 1932, the credit union has grown over the years to serve 33 counties in Central and Western Iowa. From its nine founding members, it has now grown to over 36,000 members and over $660 million in assets.
“Greater Iowa Credit Union has always looked ahead at what is possible. As we begin our 90th year of being in business, we remain committed to our mission to help people,” says Scott Zahnle, CEO of GICU. “We are proud to be a trusted partner to our members and an integral part of the communities we serve.”
To celebrate the growth of GICU, the credit union hosted a special gathering at each of its nine branches. Refreshments were served and photos from the credit union’s history were on display. “We have had a lot of fun going through old photos,” says Josh Fearnow-Sexton, Marketing & Community Outreach Manager at GICU. “I’ve especially enjoyed seeing the old newspaper ads and rate tables, many of which are from before I was born. A lot has changed over the decades.”
